| Remotivation Techniques Used In Wellness Programs
The original purpose of remotivation was to balance the relationship between treatment staff and patients so that the normal, healthy aspects of their mind and body are maintained while they received treatment for illness or disease.
This is critically important when people have chronic disease or disability. The disease or disability can overwhelm their lives. All attention is placed on what is wrong or what has been lost. Remotivation works to preserve and promote well mental and physical functioning.
As such, remotivation is ideal for wellness programs. Remotivation is a set of communication skills that teaches you to avoid problem discussions and keep the focus on the positive. This is accomplished by learning a climate of acceptance and appreciation, non-subjective questioning discussion techniques, gearing questioning to ability level of the student and focusing discussion on work or normal activities of daily living /recreation.
Maintaining any kind of wellness program can be a challenge. Remotivation keeps the participant's mental focus off the negative and on the positive possibilities of continued participation in the wellness activities.
Remotivation provides a positive individual and/or group discussion format in addition to exercise or other wellness activities. Remotivation is very different from traditional child or adult education. It is participatory. It does not include lecture, which is the lease effective form of education. It does not include judgment or correction. It inherently motivates participants.
Traditional wellness programs tend to have topical speaker provide lecture/discussion presentations that are advertised in newsletters to members. Unfortunately, while people are comfortable with this format, they do not learn much and are not psychologically motivated as a result of participation. People learn more from topical discussions in remotivation format and will be motived to apply or use what is learned.
